The first European to visit the area was Juan de la Garza who landed on July 10, 1606 on what is now known as Rancho Esperanza. From here he explored present day Lubbock and other areas of west Texas. In 1845, the town was founded by Stephen F Crockett during his military campaign against Mexican forces at the Battle of Adobe Walls. After his victory, Crockett named the town after himself and its current nameakes- Lubbock (alpha letter: Λ). In 1915, oil was discovered in nearby Webb County but it wasn’t until 1923 that production began in earnest at Tom Hooks Oil Refinery in Lubbock. This helped make Lubbock one of the most important cities in Texas with both economic development and environmental considerations becoming priorities early on. Additionally, downtown redevelopment commenced during this time including many popular bars and nightlife destinations like Live Oak Live! which has since closed down but left a lasting legacy on downtown streetscape design still today. Today there are also several high-end restaurants within walking distance as well as major shopping malls located throughout downtown districts like Ballpark Village mall which is anchored by Macy’s department store and JCPenney shoe stores among others.
