Lubbock, Texas is a city in western Texas and the seat of Lubbock County. The population was 859 as of the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Lubbock County-an unincorporated area within Midland County. The City of Lubbock was founded on November 3, 1881 by Lyman Butterfield with the intent to create an American outpost on the Rio Grande River. On December 1, 1881, Butterfield named his new city for James Bowie Lubbock Jr., one of his business partners in building the Central Pacific Railroad from Salt Lake City to Promontory Point in California. In 1924, local citizens voted to change their name from "Lubbock" to "Midland". The name has been worn by both cities ever since. Lubbocks' rich history begins with its founding as a ranching community during Rancho Chihuahua times when cattle were drives across what is now Midland County and into present-day Texas andNew Mexico Territory. In 1903–4, George Hearn bought land in what is now Midland for $5 per acre ($10 per lot). He began irrigation farming that produced crops such as cotton and corn which he sold at prices above market value so he could finance his development project; today's Hearn Ranch continues that tradition. Heard also started construction on San Miguel Dam near modern day Midland which would have filled up the Red River Valley making it uninhabitable for humans but it still remains one of Lubbocks most famous landmarks today! In 1918–19 he laid down some tracks between here and Amarillo on what became known as Central Plan Line Railroad Company line which connected Amarillo with Fort Worth along current Interstate 35W (the original route). Today you can see remnants of this line including two former switchbacks still standing just north of town off US 287/I-35W near milepost 229 (now part of IH 35W Boulevard) or you can drive through central Midlanders history museum located adjacent to downtown where you can view artifacts dating back to 1909! Lubbock is a city in Texas, located in the Midwestern United States. It was founded in 1879 by John Wesley Powell and named for Lubbock County, which at that time included present-day east Austin and most of west Dallas. The population was 96,721 as of the 2010 census.[1] The Lubbock region has been inhabited by Native Americans for over 10,000 years. In 1839, Stephen F. Austin and his party journeyed from Santa Fe to Brownsville and then on to Lubbock after hearing about an Indian village near the mouth of the Trinity River. They discovered land that would become Lubbock County. On July 24, 1879, Governor James Bowie signed legislation naming it after John Wesley Powell,[2][3] who had led an expedition through Wyoming Territory into Colorado in 1864 and explored the Rocky Mountains. Powell first settled down in what is now downtown Lubbock when he arrived there with his family in 1880. He founded the first white school in Texas – East Texas Seminary – on Main Street just south of today's State Capitol building. The town would grow rapidly around him as businesses took up space along main streets including Commerce Square (now parts of Paducah Baylor University), West End Avenue (now Interstate 35), and First Avenue (now US 287). By 1902, there were more than 100 businesses districting off a mile square downtown area plus side streets serving each business block.[4] In 1907 Buffalo Bill Cody visited LubbOCK while on his way to promote western shows at two different venues; one near downtown where he gave a speech before a large crowd outdoors as well as playing music on several stages inside[5][6][7] The following year saw another visit by Buffalo Bill when he headlined an event at Ford Auditorium[8][9] In 1915 a fire destroyed much of downtown but this did not stop traffic from moving forward; however it did cause some damage to buildings such as the old Methodist Episcopal Church which still stands today adjacent to Yesler Way Creekwalk across from Providence Presbyterian Church next door to American Bank Building[10]. In 1916 local ranchers formed their own cattle drive syndicate called Cowboys & Cowgirls which became world famous featured events during World War I; these drives also attracted Hollywood stars like Bob Hope and Bing Crosby who entertained troops stationed nearby throughout 1918 with songs they wrote or performed locally)[11],[12],[13],[14],[15]. A plaque recognizing Cowboy Hall of Fame inductee Joe DeMint can be seen outside City Hall adjacent to Main Street current day Pioneer Courthouse Square [16]. Another popular tourist attraction during this time period was Oil Field Tours operated out of various truck stops located throughout central Plains country starting around 1950s until 1995 when activity shifted indoors towards Lubbocks newest convention center built Downtown next to Stonewall Jackson Shrine starting in 1996 onwards[17]; this brought many new residents into town who helped continue growth until 2006 when cotton production peaked causing decline[]
