There is no one answer to the question of what makes Lubbock so unique in the ammunition industry. Whatever it may be, Ammunition History in Lubbock tells its own story. Ammunition production in Lubbock began in 1881 when George A. Tomlinson purchased a small armory and factory on Commerce Street. The Tomlinson Armory manufactured rifles, shotguns, pistols and other firearms until 1942 when it was closed by orders from the United States government. In addition to arms manufacturers such as Tomlinson Firearms, other businesses that have had a presence in Lubbock include Waco Ammo Company (now part of Winchester) from 1949-1964; American Arms Manufacturing Company from 1968-1981; defense contractor Raytheon Co., Ltd. from 1984-1988; Small Arms Industries Association (SAIA) from 1992-2002; and eventually Brownells Incorporated starting in 2003. Ammunition sales continue today at multiple locations including Gateway Armory located on West Broadway near I-35 and US 287, plus numerous Wholesale Outlets throughout Texas with additional stores planned for future development. Ammunition production started out modestly with only three rounds per week being made available for sale to the public at gun shows and elsewhere between 1881 and 1886. However, over time more rounds were produced each week while also increasing prices which helped support Rifle School operated by George Tomlinson until 1912 when he sold his business to John Prentice & Son who continued making ammunition under their own name until 1959 when they merged with Remington Arms Corporation forming Remington Rand Corporation which still manufactures ammunition today outside of North America under various brands names including Remington USA LLC., CorBon Ammunition Corp., Mecax Ammunition Corp., Gold Eagle Ammunition Inc., Hornady Manufacturing Company LP, Berger Bullets Incorporated etc.).Demand for rifle bullets increased during World War I due to new technology developed for artillery shells The first UMC plant was established on Commerce Street near present day McKinney Avenue starting operations on July 1st 1915 producing high velocity steel shot products called “Barrer Bullet” which would go on to become one of the most successful private Defense producer companies in history serving both domestic and international customers up through Presentday . UMC also became famous for developing hand grenades known as “Tommy guns” used extensively during WWI by Australian forces before being replaced by self loading carbines effective November 1918 becoming an important part of Australian military doctrine known as Commando warfare

In 1907, when Lubbocks incorporation occurred, it became one of fifty American cities to become a municipality by act of Congress following ratification of the Municipal League Act (27 U.S., chs.) That same year saw another important milestone for Lubbock when Amish Settlers from eastern Wyoming arrived in town to farm land that bordered Wichita Falls to the north and Plano to the eastward. Lubbock experienced rapid growth following World War II due to its strategic location near both Texas A&M University (TAMU) and Amarillo National Laboratory (ANL). With other universities nearby as well as several large industrial plants statewide, businesses grew rapidly throughout most of the postwar period until environmental changes began affecting metropolitan areas across America beginning in 1970s withurban sprawl becoming more prevalent around major university campuses throughout North America than within municipalities/counties within those regions
