Longview is a town in McLennan County, Texas, United States. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. The community was founded in 1872 by settlers from Kentucky and Illinois. The Longview post office was established in 1872 and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1908, the town name was changed to Longview after President James K. Polk's visit to Longview on October 20 that year. At that time, he met with ranchers around the area about cattle drives across Texas for the Mexican government to buy feed for their horses and oxen at low prices from American farmers. In 1912, a cotton gin and other early commercial activities were started by Drury Brothers Cotton Gin Company founders John A. Drury and W G Holmes Sr., who leased land from local landowners near present-day Springdale Boulevard and Highway 692 (now I-35W). In 1915, a water system was installed which enabled residents to irrigate their crops using gravity water delivered by two pipelines from Lake Anna north of town into McLennan Creek southeast of town. Longview is a town in west Texas, United States. The population was 1,567 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area. Founded by Englishman George Long in 1879 as an agricultural and cattle business town, Longview grew rapidly due to its location on the Pan American Highway and its access to oil wells and other natural resources. The community became known for its cotton plantations, which were among the largest in Texas. In 1914, Longview was renamed after Rear Admiral John D.Longstaff of the United States Navy who had died in action during World War I. The economy of Longview has since diversified into retail trade and professional services; however, agriculture remains a prominent part of local life with several small farmers markets still located downtown. Summertime concerts are held at various venues throughout town annually such as The Moody Theater or Barton Springs Pool Hall, while Fall brings relaxation with arts festivals including Saturday's Market Night parade and art walk around downtown areas every October/November. According to the 2000 census there are now over 4,000 people living within a radius of Longview proper (of which 3,965 live within 2 miles – that’s almost two thirds !!). Of these residents approximately 85% work outside their homes: many long distance truck drivers stop here on their way from Round Rock or San Antonio en route to far flung destinations such as El Paso or Lubbock; web developers from Fort Worth; electricians from McAllen; painters/stuccaneers from Amarillo etc., Lawyers out of Austin etc.; scientists doing research at states universities etc.; everyone who needs to be where they need to be whether it’s opening up a restaurant or starting their own business but can also do some freelance work too (you name it) Some examples: homebuilders/renovators; plumbers/pump operators; computer graphic designers like Adobe Photoshop etc.; real estate agents handling all aspects of property buying and selling including flips & land subdivisions; telemarketers registered with both cell phone companies AT&T & Verizon “landline” providers (and more); daycare providers (including full-service daycare centers), pet stores (& kennels), coffee shops (!), gas stations (& convenience stores), RV Parks (& motels), churches(!), schools (!). So much goes on here that it can easily become overwhelming! And yet so much happens so quickly that one doesn’t even realize what they were missing………..until you go back another year or two!
Longview was founded by Captain James Cook in 1779. It became a part of the United States in 1846.
