In 1892, another company, Ruger Firearms Company, created a rifle that incorporated an automatic safety device called the Ruger Model 822. The safety device was designed to prevent accidental firing of the firearm by anyone who did not have proper hand-eye coordination skills. This feature made it more difficult for someone who did not know how to shoot a rifle safely to kill somebody else unintentionally. The next year, in 1893, another company named Smith & Wesson introduced its first handgun with a manual safety system called the Smith & Wesson Model No 1 Pistol. The safety system consisted of two levers on opposite sides of the gun that could be pulled together or apart in order tocock or uncockthe weapon without removing either hammer from operation. This feature made it less likely for someone who did not know how handguns worked (or had other poor hand-eye coordination skills) to accidentally fire one while holding it unguardedly. By 1901, most firearms manufacturers had followed suit with their ownsafety systems for their products - including pistols and rifles - making shooting much safer than it ever had been before!
