A gunman opened fire on a crowd of people gathered to listen to music at the Longview Fairgrounds in 1916 killing four people and wounding twenty-one. On July 3, 1927, an incident occurred at the Ector County Courthouse where five men including one gunman shot and killed nine county commissioners. On October 5th of that year an individual named Jack Hebert opened fire on several individuals attending a party near Eagle Ford Dam killing one adult female and injuring thirteen other civilians before being arrested.

The first people to live in what is now Longview were the Caddo and Wichita Indians. They lived along the Brazos River near present-day Cypress and Clear Lake. The first white man to come to Longview was Captain James Hogg who landed on July 8, 1836, on a small island just upstream from today's town center. He named it after his home country, Lancastria (now Liverpool) in England. In 1839, Colonel John Epps founded Fort Worth east of Longview on an old Native American trail that led from San Antonio down into Galveston Bayou. In 1840, Congressman George Prentice laid out a townsite within present-day Longview about three miles south of what is now downtown Houston; Prentice named it Prairie View because of its resemblance to prairies back home in England. Some early residents of Longview included Jno Denton and Drayton McLennan who married sisters Emmeline daughter of David Hume and Jane Welsh Hughes; both women were born around 1795 near present-day Barker Ranch in Kendall County adjoining Montgomery County - this gave themperty rights over most land within the town limits that they never exercised because they did not own any salt or other minerals; they did however strong
