By 1837 John White had arrived from Georgia with his wife Anna and children Charles (born about 1840), Moses (born about 1842), James (born about 1845) and Elizabeth born about 1847; they set up their home oncurrent-day 1st Street between First Avenue South and Second Avenue North; this site would become known as White's Hill later renamed Hillsborough Heights after them. Mrs White died in childbirth in 1850 while Mr White married again soon afterwards to Sarah Morrow; this marriage also produced two sons: George Washington born about1853/4and Jesse Pickett born about 1860/1). In 1840 Wm Crain opened a mercantile business at Third and Lamar Streets which became known as the "Gourd Patch." In 1865 Lorenzo Snow established an grocery store on Second Street between First Avenue South & Second Avenue North which still operates today as Longhorn Feed & Grain Co.; it is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places . In 1870 Robert Epps began operations of a wagon dealership at Seventh & Elm streets which became Epps Ford Workslater renamed Eppes Motorsports Incorporated; it continues to operate today as Bob Evans Farms LLC., one of Longview’s largest employers .
