The name "Longview" likely applied to two nearby settlements - Lone Oak and Prairie View - as well as the village of Willowbrook. The first settler in what is now Longview was Johnnie Atkins who arrived in 1836. He named his new community after his plantation of the same name located in present-day Louisiana. Atkins had left England for America on a ship called "SS Great Britain". Many other settlers followed him to Longview during the years that followed including James Fenton (1837), Wm Hogg (1838), Domingo Rodriguez (1839), David Sims (1840), Lorenzo Mata (1841), Michael O'Keefe (1842) and A.J.
