Longview is a town in Texas, located in the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area. The population was 38,895 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth-Arlington Combined Statistical Area. The first recorded mention of Longview was in 1859 when it was called "Longhorn City". In 1881, John W. Slaughter purchased an acreage east of the present town line and renamed it Longview after his father's home state of New York. He also donated land to build a park that still exists today - Slaughter Park (now called Lakewood Ranch). In 1902, James Fenton bought an additional two acres for $2,000 and named it Longview Heights. He built a small house on this property which served as his home until his death in 1943. His wife, Jessie Bates Fenton continued to live there until her death in 1988. In 1907, Harry Aiken donated land along I-635 south of town to become what is now Arlington Cemetery; he had been interested in developing Arlington into a city but did not want any part of Fort Worth near his cemetery so he donated the land instead. However, Arlington never became a city due to lack of support from local leaders or residents and most development occurred within the current boundaries of LongVIEW before I-635 was routed around it and bypassed altogether

Some residents even settled in what is now Spring Branch because they thought it would be more comfortable thanHouston’s humid climate and lack of natural resources (particularly oil). Eventually people from all over Central Texas came together in Houston to start businesses such as hotels and restaurants (the first real test for this fledgling city). Businesses flourished until around 1929 when prohibition ended and downtown business activities dwindled due to high costs associated with running such a large canteen/. During World War II local industry faltered as most citizens turned their attentions towards war effort instead (the only consistent industry throughout all these years was agriculture which supported numerous families through crop production). After 1945 things slowly started picking up again as manufacturing plants closed down due to technological advancements but remain largely dormant today (- most recently there were plans for a massive petrochemical plant) . After 50 years without much activity on the part of locals or outsiders much has changed here - mainly potholes have taken over development patterns while basic services like water main replacements have been sporadic at best (+ some hope this trend will change soon)... so lets take another look!

In the early 1800s, Longview was a small settlement on the edge of what is now Williamson County. The first store in town was built in 1797 by George Clutton and his brother James. In 1809, the town was renamed after Brigadier-General Ross Longstreet, who fought in the Texas Revolution. The post office was established in 1817, and named for Senator John Fenton Longstreth. By 1826, there were five stores and one blacksmith shop in town. In 1829, a school was built for children in town. By 1840, there were twenty-two homes in town and four churches. In 1865, Longview became an independent municipality with its own government. The first school board was elected in 1870; it replaced an earlier board that had been appointed by the central government. In 1880, the population of Longview consisted of seventy-one residents; it had grown to one hundred residents by 1890. By 1900,Longview had three stores and six inns; it also boasted a grammar school (1898), high school (1902), fire department (1904), library (1906),and two breweries (1896–1900).
