There was once a small town in Longview, Texas that had a strong gun culture. In the early 1900’s, the town was home to a large arms manufacturer. The factory produced rifles and shotguns for both local militia and law enforcement. Gun targets were also manufactured at the factory. These targets were used by residents of Longview to practice their shooting skills and provide fun for themselves and their children. The guns made in the factory were often confiscated by the police because they were not registered with the government. The guns from the company ended up being passed down through families until they finally got sold off to another individual or business in 2000. At this point, there are only a few remaining pieces of old hardware left at the plant. Today, gun target history in Longview is still alive and well! The history of the Longview gun target is traced back to 1892. At that time, it was the first shooting range in Longview and one of the first in Texas. The range was located on Fourth Street between Sherman and Polk streets. It was designed by John A. Brown and opened to the public on October 3, 1892.

Payne in 1879. Payne and his family built their house on what is now Main Street.
