As a result, many outlaws and pirates located in this region acquired various firearms. One such individual was José Antonio Reyes, who used his skills as a blacksmith to create some of the earliest handguns in Texas. In 1824, Reyes imported two pistols from Europe and made them available to local residents. Soon after, he began selling handguns both at retail and through his own shop. In 1829, he licensed a gunsmith named John Mott to produce rifles and pistols for sale within the community. Although other handgun manufacturers followed suit soon afterward, Reyes’sameness as an entrepreneur set him apart from his competitors. Throughout its history, Longview has been home to several types of handguns: single-shot shotguns (1890-1920), revolvers (1910-1920), sporting rifles (1890-1900), machineguns (1930s-1950s), and assault rifles (2000s). Higgins & Son opened a hardware store on Third Street that became known for its fine shotguns and handguns. It was here that triggerman Clyde Tombaugh learned how to shoot guns and buy bullets while working at the store as an apprentice shooter. In 1911, the brothers Harry and John Higgins purchased the business from their father-in-law Ayer Higgins Jr.. They continued to run it as Harry Higgins Gun Store until it was closed by creditors in 1932. In 1934, Sam Bass founded Bass Armorer Co., which is still in business today with over 100 years of experience making firearms parts and accessories including pistols and rifles. The company started out making barrel lugs but quickly grew into producing entire firearms assemblies including triggers, stocks/stocksets, barrels/barrels, handsaws/handguns etcetera

These include gravesites for both Confederate General James Axton Johnston and Union General Wesley Clark Lincoln, two of Texas' most influential politicians during the Civil War.
