Longview is a small town in east Texas, located about 20 miles south of Dallas. The population was 2,531 at the 2010 census. It has been called the "Gateway of Texas" and the "Cotton Capital of America." Longview was founded in 1853 by pioneers who were seekers of new land to settle after their discovery of oil in nearby Red River County. The first post office in Longview was established on July 25, 1853, and named for Samuel L. Long (1775-1847), an American banker and politician from Massachusetts who served as United States Minister to Mexico City from 1846 to 1850. The original community had a population of just 10 people. By 1860, there were over 100 residents living in the area around what is now Longview Village. In 1865, a school was built near the current intersection of FM 1960 and US 183; the town charter was granted on March 1, 1870. In 1881, county commissioners decided that a courthouse should be built on Elm Street; construction began October 1st and finished January 8th that year. The cornerstone for present day Courthouse Square was laid on November 11th 1889 by Judge J M Tateyoshi, one of Longview's earliest settlers and future Mayor of Longview (1901-1907). After several years of construction, it opened its doors to the public on December 3rd 1893. During World War II some long distance truck drivers used LongVIEW as their basecamp because it had no commercial facilities available closer than 15 miles away! Over time many businesses have sprung up around this core community including: electronic store Myer’s(1963-2000), Kwik Trip(1980-present), Dollar General(1978-present) & ExxonMobil gas pump(2001-)
On November 1, 1836, Longview was founded as a town in Caldwell County, Texas. The first post office in the community was established on December 3, 1836. On January 6, 1840, Longview became an Insular Territory of the United States and was under the jurisdiction of the U.S. Virgin Islands Department of Foreign Missions.
