In 1881, Longview was founded as a town in this current county by W.H. Stephenson and his family. The first post office in Longview was established in 1882, and the town opened its doors to the public on July 1, 1883. By 1902, Longview had grown to include a population of over 400 residents. In 1915, the Texas Railroad Commission designated the towns of Commerce and Longview together as a single city under the name “Longview”. By 1938, when Longview became an independent municipality, it had a population of over 2,500 people. In terms of size it dwarfs even nearby Austin which has only a fraction of its population (the entire population between them amounts to just over 100K).[26].

Longview is a town in Midland County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,032 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Midland-Odessa metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1879 by John Prentice and his brother James as an agricultural community on the east side of Longview River. The name "Longview" originated from a wagon train that passed through the area on its way to Fort Worth in 1881. The first store in Longview opened in 1879. In 1886, John Prentice donated land for a high school and gymnasium; these were built on land currently occupied by Pershing Middle School and East High School. By 1905, Longview had three banks, two churches (First Baptist and Methodist), six stores, four schools (including one Friends school), two hotels/motels, and several farms including White Sands Ranch which still stands today. In 1912,[1] African Americans were awarded voting rights for the first time in Texas history.[2] In 1922,[3] the Longwood Hotel was built adjacent to East High School; it served as both a hotel and social club until it burned down in 1951. In 1941,[4] Tower Theatre opened on Main Street opposite First Baptist Church; it was one of only two theatres open during World War II with free entertainment for all troops inside[5][6]. In 1957,[7] the old Post Office building became home to what is now Midland Christian College;[8][9][10][11] this building remain operational until it burned down in 1984.[12][13]:5-7 It replaced an earlier structure which also served as a courthouse from 1880 to 1907[14]:2 One of many Frank Fenton buildings located around town during this time also became home to Midland Christian College after he donated land for its construction (the building still stands today). After years of struggle by local residents over proposed plans for annexation into Odessa proper due to lack of development within the limits set forth by city ordinance,[15], voters defeated these proposals at a special election held on November 3rd, 1958.[16]:3 On December 5th 1959 vote granted incorporation into Odessa proper but ownership reverted back to longview trustees effective January 1st 1960 although they continue operate under their original name today
