Longview is a town in San Antonio County, Texas, United States. The population was 9,993 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. The first European to visit Longview was José81 de Oviedo on January 8, 1795. He named it after his ship, La Romana which he had sighted while exploring the Texas Coast Range. A post office was established at Longview on March 2, 1836, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1912. In 1876-77, J. Sterling Price built a sawmill and gristmill hereabouts and conducted an extensive freight business with shipments to New Mexico and California. His successors continued this important enterprise for many years; then Dusty Glover bought Price's interest in 1901 and continued it until his death in 1922. In 1906-07 Wanda Hargrave erected a two story frame mansion on present day Elm Street between First Avenue (now Main) and Second Street for herself and her husband John Waddell Hargrave; Mrs. Hargrave used the house as their home from 1917 until her death in 1939. Mrs., Hargrave also managed various stores within the town limits during this time period including one adjacent to her house which still stands today known as "The Gables". In 1938 Clifford Kinch started construction of what would become Kinch Field (later Rice Stadium). In the early 1800s, Longview was a small farming town located in what is now Kaufman County, Texas. The community was founded by entrepreneur and land owner James Long in 1822. By 1830,Longview had a population of about 200 people. In 1848, the area was annexed by Dallas and became a part of the city limits. In 1868, Longview was renamed toDallas after the first president of the United States, James K. Polk. The name change came about because many residents in Dallas thought that Longview sounded too similar to Chicago's Park Ridge neighborhood.
