In 1849, George Crockett settled a claim along Buffalo Gap Creek which formed the basis for his later ranching operations near present day Longview. At that time there were no towns or settlements within DeSoto County other than Huntsville and Galveston; therefore, Crockett's settlement likely served as an important station on his route from Huntsville to Galveston. In 1875, Judge John Wittell moved hislaw office from Huntsville to Longview following its construction by local subscription on land donated by Wittell himself In 1907, President William Howard Taft shifted Ulysses S. Grant's cavalry division headquarters from Fort Sam Houston to Longview after their victory over Native American raiders at Palo Alto Hill. On November 25th 1907 Captain Heston Davenport USN (1881-1966), commanding officer of USS "Palo Alto", visited Longview while en route between Corpus Christi and San Diego during World War I when he stopped at White Sands Missile Range east of Albuquerque New Mexico 1st Lt Charles Eames USMC (1914-1992) killed while serving with Marine Corps Reconnaissance Battalion 4th Marine Division aboard USS "Arizona" off Kwajalein Atoll 17 January 1945 became one of only two Americans ever awarded the Medal Of Honor while serving with Marines; also receive Navy Cross for heroism ashore 6 September 1944 Since 2007 longviewtx has been home to rodeo cowboy roping world champion jessica riggins
