The town was founded by ranchers in 1881. The current mayor and city council are all women. The history of Lockhart begins with cattle drives from Saline County to here in 1881. For two years, these men and their families lived off the land on what became known as "Lockhart Ranch". In 1883, a post office named for this community was opened here. By 1890, businesses had sprung up around the corner from Third Street on Main Street - now downtown Lockhart - and business grew so much that a second post office (named for Captain John Fetterman) was erected in 1893. The first telephone line arrived here in 1903; it ran along Third Street between Main and Elm Streets. At this time there were only three homes in Lockhart - one of which still stands today - but within 10 years they had all become businesses or residences. In 1915-16, Judge J H Crampton donated land east of main street to be used as an open ended recreational area; it's now known as Parkland Park Recreation Area

It became a municipality in 1907. In 1919, it became a city, and it has since grown to have a population of over 10,000 people. The town was named for General Patrick Henry Lockhart who fought during the American Revolution. Lockhart first came to the area when he owned land near what is now Lockhart Municipal Airport. He started trading goods with Native Americans and then sold rights to explore this new land to others. When wagon trains arrived in 1849 looking for Santa Fe Trail connections through central Mexico City, they passed through Lockhart on their way northbound. This early trade brought settlers here from all over Texas and Oklahoma Territory including Wichita County which lay adjacent to today’sLockhart. In 1881, James A. Lockhart donated 640 acres (2 km²) of land east of the Trinity River which would become home to the town center today There were only two buildings in town when it was founded- Mr. & Mrs. Smith’s grocery store and post office- both built around 1889 The first school session began on September 9th, 1881 with 15 students from Wichita County attending taught by Mr & Mrs Stephenson .lockhart High School opened its doors on September 25th 1886 with 11 students attending under guidance of Dr John Witherspoon .lockheart Normal School opened its doors on November 3rd 1888 with 8 students attendin teaching by Rev J F Dickson lockheart Academyopened its doors on January 1st 1893 with 12 students under instruction by Rev C R Thomson . logan Collegeopened its doors August 6th 1896 with 7 students attend ing instruction from Rev E P Hoggardson lockport Instituteof Technologyopened its doors October 2nd 1902with 5 students attending instruction from Professors H N Alexander ect… These institutions quickly replaced year old schools as businesses grew prosperous hereabouts…. By 1907 there were 12 public schools “and two private academies” within our limits
The history of Lockhart, Texas begins with the first European settlers in the area in 1836. When the Mexican-American War began, a group of Texans decided to cross the Rio Grande and fight for Mexico. However, only a few men made it across and they were quickly pursued by Australian forces. The soldiers killed all but one man and captured most of the rest. This event is known as the " lockhart massacre". The Texans who survived soon founded a small town on what is now east side of town, near present day intersection of Loop 610 and FM 551. They named their new community after General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna who had led an unsuccessful attack against Mexico two years earlier. The early Lockhart residents grew crops and sold goods from their homes until 1876 when railroads arrived in Lockhart making it a larger town. In 1948, Lockhart became part of Corpus Christi County when it was established as an official county seat. It remained that way until 1972 when it was changed to its current location along Loop 610/FM 551
