In the early 1800s, it was necessary to have someone stand in front of the firing line to hold down the firing pins on the targets. After a few years, people began using rocks or other objects as shooters’ stands. In 1892, lockhart saw its first rifle match. That year, two men from Lockhart banded together to start their own rifle range out of an old barn. They used what they had to build their stands and equipment from materials they could find around town. In 1903, a group of men organized into Rifle Clubs and began holding matches at various locales around town. As Match Day approached, locals would bring in old rifles for use in shootouts at these clubs’ ranges! Match days would typically end with dinner at a local restaurant before getting back into action at their respective ranges the next morning! Some lucky shooters even got to take home some pretty fine prizes during this time period! By 1916, there were so many Rifle Clubs operating throughout Lockhart that it was decided to form one official club organization under the name “Lockhart Rifle Club” This club continues today as one of our most popular organizations here in Lockhart!

The third type of Shooting Target Holder is called an Eye-Fipper Target Holder and was developed by Harry Menges in 1958. It features an eye-catching design that makes it easy for shooters to identify their targets from far away! Lockhart was founded in 1868 by John Lockhart and his wife, Emma. The town is located in the Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land metropolitan area and is considered to be a bedroom community for the Houston metropolitan area. The population of Lockhart peaked at over 15,000 in the early 1920s but has since declined slightly. Today, the population residing in Lockhart is around 8,500. Lockhart was originally named for Neely County, Texas pioneer James Locker who settled there in 1853. The first post office opened in Lockhart on July 1, 1868. At that time, it was just a small farming village with no businesses or services other than groceries and farm animals. In 1924, during World War I, Lockhart became one of several U.S.-occupied towns along the Mexican border that were effectively given to Mexico as part of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. As a result of this event, most residents left Lockhart for good before World War II began; however, a few remained until 1944 when all hostilities ended and the town resumed its normal growth pattern. Lockerhart was founded in 1885 by J.D. Lockhart and his brother-in-law, W.H. Clements, as a cattle market town located east of the Red River on the banks of the Brazos River. The town quickly grew to become a major transportation hub for cattle and other goods moving westward through the area. In 1912, Lockerhart became an independent municipality, and in 1916 it was annexed by Austin.
