Lockhart, Texas is a small city in Schleicher County, Texas, United States. It was founded in 1881 by J.L. Lockhart and named after him. The now-defunct Armour & Co., a local armory, produced rifles and shotguns here from 1884 to 1906. The city's rifle stocks are still owned and operated by the Lockhart Rifle Club. In 1886, J.L. Lockhart founded Armour & Co., which produced rifles and shotguns in Lockhart until 1906 when it closed its doors due to financial difficulties. Many of the products that were made here at Armour & Co.'s original location are still being sold today as part of the Lockhart Rifle Club's inventory: such as rifle barrels, stocks and grips, triggers, sights etcetera. This particular museum also contains artifacts from various other industries that have been located within or around Lockhart over the years: such as oil refineries and chemical plants which all contributed their share of industrial relics to this particular community during its formative years; most notably those two entities together forming what is now known as "The Brick Belt". In addition to its traditional arts & crafts scenes along Main Street just south of Interstate 20a (),the town has seen increasing concentrations of Hispanics due to recent waves of migration from Mexico City and Central America ().

The first post office in Lockhart was established in 1887. One of the early residents of the town was John Pemberton, who arrived from Indiana in 1881. He started a general store on Main Street and also operated a blacksmith shop. In 1899, Pemberton sold his share of the business to Maud Tilden and her husband, Wm. Hickey Tilden. They continued to run the store until 1951 when it was acquired by J.C. Penney Company. In 1915, Lockhart resident James Huggins organized a group that campaigned for annexation of Johnson County by Dallas County because they felt their community would benefit from increased commercial opportunities within the new county boundaries. Their effort failed, but lockhart remains one of only two towns (the other being Emporia) in Texas that have voted to remain unincorporated throughout its history (the other being Georgetown). Lockhart experienced some growth during World War II due to its proximity to military installations such as Fort Worth Army Air Station and Camp Bowie which housed United StatesAAF pilots training for Operation Overlord; however, this growth stopped after 1945 when most of those installations were closed down or converted into housing tracts or clubhouses.[1] The population peaked at 495 people during the 1960 census[2], but declined over subsequent decades due to migration away from rural Texans into larger cities such as Austin and Dallas.[3] In 2000, Lockhart had an estimated population of 110 people[4]. By 2010,[5], it had fallen below 100 people again[6]. Today, it retains some historical significance as one of only two remaining communities in Texas with voting rights both before and after statehood (the other being Georgetown).[7]
