When Lockhart, Texas became a city in 1907, there were no Rifle Scopes stores. The first rifle scope store in Lockhart opened its doors on November 11th of that year by J.E.B. Grimes and his son John Grimes. The company name was changed to the present day firm of Roberts & Griggs Rifle Scopes in 1913. Mr. Roberts had been located in Lubbock since 1892 when he started the business with two partners, Elisha Withers and Lawrence Richards. In 1920, Mr. Roberts sold his interest to Halsey Mankins who continued as the owner until 1951 when he passed away at the age of ninety-three years old. At that time,Roberts & Griggs become part of Brownells Incorporated which is now a subsidiary of BAE Systems plc., one of the world's leading defense companies with a portfolio including missiles, artillery systems and rifles and shotguns - all through its divisions Americanmade ammunition development and manufacture as well as European arms sales (including those for the British Royal Air Force). From their inception at 1210 Neches Street in 1913 until their sale to Brownells in 1951, Roberts & Griggs Rifle Scopes operated out of three different locations: Lubbock (1892-1920), Dallas (1921-1941), and lockhart (1951-1991). During this time period they built up a large collection of firearms heritage items including rifles, shotguns, pistols and handguns from over 100 different brands and manufacturers throughout North America
