Lockhart, Texas is located in the United States of America and is a small town located on the banks of the Brazos River. The population was 7,694 at the 2010 census. Lockhart is part of the Houston-The Woodlands-Sugar Land metropolitan area. Lockhart was founded in 1871 by brothers John and James Lockhart. The first post office in Lockhart was established in 1872. In 1909, a school named after Mrs. Lillie Waddell opened in Lockhart. It closed in 1951 due to financial difficulties. In 1954, an oil refinery was built in nearby Pecan Bayou and became one of the largest facilities for refining petroleum products in Texas. The plant employed over 1,000 people and produced millions of gallons of gasoline, diesel fuel, kerosene and other products each year until its closure in 1984. In 1956, lockharts Miracle Mile Mall opened as one of the largest shopping malls ever built outside of North America with more than 350 stores including Sears Roebuck & Co., JCPenney Inc., Macy's Inc., Sears Canada Ltd., Kohl's Department Stores Company (now Kmart), Disney Store Canada (now Walt Disney World), Unigine Corp.'s Ultralight Helicopter Systems dealership, Ford Motor Company's Light trucks maintenance/repair center and Morenci Corporation's flour mill which ground corn for local feeders into flour for local grocery stores

Lockhart, Texas is a town in Waller County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,887 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1879 by John Lockhart and his wife, Sarah. The first post office in Lockhart was established in 1879. In 1907, the town renamed itself to honor Lucius N. Lockhart who had served as Governor of Texas from 1901-1903 and as Ambassador to Mexico City from 1906-1908. He also served as Secretary of State for Texan Reconstruction following the American Civil War. In 1953, the original lockharts were replaced by a new family name when they donated land for a high school which would be named after them. The current High School Lockhart opened its doors in 1962 with then Principal Skip Widenbach serving as its first principal and later becoming Superintendent until he retired in 2003 ( concurrent with his successor's appointment). In 1846, Lockhart was founded by Captain David Lockhart and his wife Anna. The first store in Lockhart opened its doors on December 12, 1846. The town rapidly grew and soon became known as the "Gateway to the Texas Panhandle." In 1860, Lockhart was renamed Fort Worth after General Sam Houston's victory over Mexican forces at the Battle of San Jacinto. In 1907, Fort Worth incorporated as a city.
