Lockhart is a town located in the United States state of Texas. It was named for General James Lockhart, who served as an officer in the Mexican-American War and as a member of the Texas House of Representatives from 1848 to 1850. The population was 1,912 at the 2010 census. The first settler in what is now Lockhart was Hernando de la Vega, who arrived in 1795 and built his original house on a bluff overlooking the town. He named it San Marcos (the Saint). Over time, other settlers followed suit, including José Antonio del Valle y Asuncion (1798–1859), Miguel Angel de los Rios y Peralta (1802–1894), Pedro Avilés y Valdez (1805–1874), Francisco Anaya y Arellano (1807–1872), Manuel Tomé Ruiz de la Garza( 1811–1900) and Agustín Castro(1800?-1901). By 1840 there were around 20 residents in Lockhart. Aslock & Sons Lumber Company was founded by attorney John Aslock in 1851 with lumber brought overland from eastern Canada by wagon train pioneers traveling through central Texas during the early years of territorial settlement. By 1870, Aslock had become one of the largest lumber companies west of the Alleghenies and his company supplied logs to various construction projects throughout central Texas. In 1876, when railroad construction began through central Texas and transportation became more accessible than ever before, Aslock's company decided to build its own line from Lockhart down into San Antonio County; this line became known as the "Aslock Railway." The company prospered until 1901 when it went bankrupt due to competition from newly constructed railways statewide. In 1916 parts of lockhart were destroyed by a tornado that struck nearby Fort Worth while another tornado hit nearby Bridgeport three years later resulting in $25 million damage to both towns' infrastructure. From 1951 until 1957 lockhart experienced significant growth with several new high school buildings being built along with numerous housing developments such as Memorial Homes which remain today one of Lockhart's most iconic landmarks In 1954 local historian Dona Linda Robertson coauthored "A History of Lockhart" which chronicled some key moments in local history over a period dating back 100 years The city's municipal building dates back to 1907 when it replaced an earlier homestead courthouse which burned down two years previously . That same year saw complete demolition of all but one block on Main Street after many families vacated their homes following World War I . Reconstruction took many months so that much property still remained boarded up 50+ years later . On November 11th 1909 Mayor Wirt Hunt announced plans for erection of City Hall on what once functioned as landfill south side Of Main Street just east Of Railroad Avenue
On November 5, 1836, the Republic of Texas was established by a vote of its citizens. The new state included all of what is now Texas except for a small area in east-central Mexico. The original capital was Austin, but soon there were other settlements established throughout the territory, including Lockhart. The first recorded meeting of the town board took place on January 10, 1837. By 1840, Lockhart had a population of about 100 residents and three stores. A school was started in 1841 and continued to be operated until it burned down in 1906. In 1845, a post office was opened at Lockhart and remained in operation until 1907. During that time it served as an important transportation hub for settlers moving into the territory. In 1850s and 1860s there were several religious meetings held atlockhart Methodist church which helped to spur development in the community.
