Lockhart, Texas is a small town in the United States located in Hidalgo County. The population was 6,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin-Round Rock Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name Lockhart comes from the Spanish "lókahuatl" meaning “a place where woodchucks live” and it refers to a logging camp near present-day Lockhart that was used by Captain James K. Polk during his 1846 Tour of Texas as part of his effort to win independence for Mexico. The loggers abandoned their campsite in 1848 and began building a nearby cotton gin on what is now First Street. A post office was established at Lockhart in 1856, but due to its remote location, no mail arrived until after the Civil War when Confederate General Robert E. Lee sent an express courier with a letter from Union General Ulysses S. Grant to PostmasterGeneral Nicholas Biddle seeking delivery at Lockhart because he believed Grant could not be reached by railroads across the Rio Grande intact. On November 15, 1865, after days of fighting between Confederate forces and Union troops near San Antonio, Texas – known as Battle Acre – Confederate Lieutenant Colonel John Pemberton surrendered at Goliad Creek under heavy gunfire from Union cavalrymen while trying to cross the river unassisted; this event marked the end of Reconstruction in Texas and effectively ended slavery within that state following its victory over Union forces two years earlier. The first store opened in Lockhart on October 14, 1886 by businessman Wm Dennison Sr., who named it Dennison's Drug Store & Cotton Gin because he had purchased land for the business adjacent to what is now First Street between Bascom and Lamar streets. After several years of growth (including adding a second store on West Second Street), Dennison's Store became one of Lockhart's most prominent businesses and features can still be found throughout town today including an original neon sign above the door which reads "Dennisons Drug Store". In 1907 Jens Christensen founded Christensen Bros., Inc., which became one of lockhart's largest employers with plants manufacturing agricultural machinery (including models for Ford Model Ts) as well as automobiles (the first car manufactured there). Christensen Bros.'s products were also sold online through eBay beginning in 2006 before ceasing operations in 2011 due to health concerns related to lead exposure from manufacturing processes decades ago In 1951 Donny George started operating George Chevrolet here on Main Street opposite State Bank Building across Plaza Boulevard; this was followed by other local businesses such as Lumberyard Inn & Grill (1986), Pizza Hut (1997), All Nite Out Lounge (& More) (1998), Chipper's BBQ ('98-'99), Cowboy Joe's Pizza ($) ('00-'04), Bashful Bob's Hamburgers ($) ('07-)['08], etc.; all closed within 5 years or less following initial startup costs associated with new business ventures being acquired or existing facilities/chains expanding rapidly multiple times over without proper planning or oversight typically resultingin increased traffic congestion/environmental impact alongwith increased financial strain often compromising public safety via lost or stolen property among others In early 2009lockhart Tx announced plans for redevelopment into an Arts District powered by energy recovered water used for renewable cooling systems beneath downtown structures with hopes eventually becoming home to numerous cultural events year round including music concerts, art shows& exhibitions etc.; project stalled out amidst resistance from elected officials who did not want downtown developments overlapping THEIR city limits
