Beauregard built Fort Bend County Museum which still stands today across from lockhart's courthouse square today! The first post office opened in 1898 and named after George Washington Woodward (1812-1898). The first store was built by Wm H McDowell in 1902; however it burned down one year later. The first school was built in 1907 by Mrs Lillie Pritchard; however it too burned down within 5 years of opening! A local newspaper called The Log Cabin published its first issue on December 12th 1903 making Lockhart one of only two towns in Hudspeth County (the other being Fredericksburg) that had newspapers! However this paper also ceased publication 3 years later due to financial problems! lockhart has always been an agricultural town with many farms surrounding it providing feed for cows and other animals throughout most of its history! There are currently only 2 remaining farms active within lockhart - these are both dairy farms supplying milk for local restaurants statewide! Today Lockhart is home to many businesses including several banks as well as numerous grocery stores, clothing stores, auto dealership's etc... As an agricultural community it has also long been known for its famous red Cattle Company cornmeal
