Lockhart, Texas is a town in Johnson County, Texas, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Johnson County. The name of Lockhart comes from Old English "Loke" meaning a sounding board or platform, and "hart" meaning place or fortification. The first settlers in Lockhart were farmers who arrived in 1845. A post office called Lockhart was established in 1848, and became a city on May 30, 1893. In 1898, oil was discovered near Lockheart and production began soon after. By 1915 it had become one of the largest oil towns in the world with over 100 companies working at its various sites. In 1936 oil production ceased due to an embargo by Nazi Germany but restarted several years later when America entered World War II. After the war ended again in 1945 Oil Production resumed as it had before until 1973 when production stopped due to lack of new technology and High Capacity Kits (HCK) becoming popular because they allowed for increased output while reducing environmental damage caused by traditional drilling rigs

The town continued to grow as businesses developed and new residents moved into the area. In 1955, a new high school building was constructed and in 1959, a municipal airport became operational. In 1970, a new sports complex became available in the town and in 1984, a new library became available. Today,Lockhart is an established community with strong cultural values that contribute to its vibrancy.

The current courthouse was built in 1898 and it is the only courthouse in town. In 1912, Waddell Post Office opened and served Lockhart until it closed in 1978. In 1916, the Poplar Street Dam collapsed and destroyed most of the town leaving only a few buildings standing. However, since 1994, Lockhart has had a Festival of Lights which features light displays every night from October 15 to December 5th during which time there are also several concerts/events held throughout the season including an ice cream social on New Year's Eve (which has been done every year since)).
