Lockhart is a city in Tarrant County, Texas, United States. The population was 7,559 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fort Worth-Arlington-Eagle Ford Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city was named for John Lockhart (1821–1900), an early settler and banker in the area. The first post office in Lockhart opened on December 5, 1875. In 1881, George Fenton built a sawmill and gristmill near what is now Elmendorf Boulevard and Trinity Avenue. In 1907, Wm. Ayer founded Coleman Chevrolet Company in Lockhart with his brother-in-law Jock Willis as its first president. The town annexed Temple Terrace to itself in 1916 and then annexed Arlington Heights in 1922. In 1944, Lockhart became home to the Army Air Forces' headquarters for Texas during World War II when Colgate University moved from Garland to nearby Fort Worth Airport to house American forces after they had been evacuated from Japan following the bombing of Hiroshima. In 1957, Lyndon Johnson announced he would run for re-election as President of the United States on November 3rd and chose Lockhart as his campaign headquarters; this decision solidified his nickname "The Lone Star President." On November 1st of that year (1957), four days before election day, Hurricane Betsy hit Texas causing extensive damage throughout much of Central Texas including Lockhart which lost power for several days after sustained winds up to 125 mph (185 km/h). About $10 million worth of damage was done by Betsy across Tarrant County alone - more than any other county in Texas combined! That same year also saw the opening of lockhart's first modern high school - Central High School - located on present day Elmendorf Boulevard between Trinity Avenue and University Drive; this building replaced an earlier one destroyed by a cyclone two years previously just west of town limits along Buffalo Bayou upstream from downtownLockheart which then included most if not allof Arlington Heights within its boundaries! Lockhart, Texas is a small town in Williamson County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,857 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Williamson County. Lockhart is located on the Brazos River and borders Woodville to the east and Stephen F. Austin to the west. The first settler in what is now Lockhart was George Armstrong Copley who arrived in 1836 from Boston. He established a log cabin on a bluff overlooking the Brazos River. At that time it was one of only a few settlements in Williamson County and it would not become an official town until 1861 when John Hogg organized it as part of new McLennan County. In 1872, Jno Waddell built his mill on stream below lock Hartwig & Waddell's Mill which became known as "The DAM". This mill had power for lightening rods and cotton spinning until destroyed by fire in 1922; however, its lock remains today as a tourist attraction within walking distance of Lockhart City Hall In 1875-76 Clifford Loyd built a sawmill on river bottom just south of town off US Highway 83 near present day Brushy Creek Elementary School; this mill continued operations until 1938 when it caught fire due to faulty wiring. In 1886 Hiram Silliman erected a post office at what would later become Lockhart; mail service began Sept 1st 1886 with two letters per week arriving by stagecoach from Houston via San Antonio de Bexar . The first postmaster - James Hance - served eight years before he was replaced by Myron Yoakum who served for ten years before retirement effective Jan 1st 1909 This period marked one of great growth for Lockhart with many buildings being erected including First Baptist Church (1887), Block House Hotel (1889), Masonic Temple No 2 (1893) and Pembina Bank Annex (1910). On Dec 5th 1912 local school board voted to create junior high school which opened September 12th 1913 under name "Haley High School" after Mrs Haley guardian/mistress thereof during its early days.; several businesses were also started or developed during this time such as Jacksons grocery store (1913), Ford dealership (1920) and David Lillard’s Paint shop(1922). After serving four terms as principal Dr Doddington resigned effective Mar 15th 1933 citing personal reasons following death of his son Robert A Doddington Sr., Jr.. Mr Doddington’s replacement Dr Clyde Iverson took office on April 16th 1933 having previously been assistant principal at Lamar Consolidated Schools since 1928;Dr Iverson soon moved up through the ranks becoming Superintendent emeritus upon his retirement effective Dec 31st 1973 age 75 years old! With Dr Iverson's departure came increased competition for students between Highland Park ISD across FM 1025 to our east and SamHouston Independent School District across FM 965 about six miles west situated atop hills making transportation difficult both ways making education even more important especially given all that has happened recently here including Hurricane Harvey! Lockhart, Texas was founded by John C. Lockhart in 1876. The town was named for Lockhart's father-in-law, James M. Lockhart. The first post office was established in the town in 1877. In 1888, the name of the town was changed to Fort Worth and it has remained that way ever since.
