Lockhart is a town located in Midland County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. The first permanent settler in what is now Lockhart was James Fenton in 1836. It was named after Colonel John Lockhart of Scotland who had been stationed in the area during the Mexican-American War. A post office called Lockhart was established in 1849, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1902. In 1881, Lula Means moved to Lockhart from Wichita Falls and opened a grocery store which became the nucleus of means' business activity for many years. In 1898 Means married J B Henson and they also operated a grocery store together for some time before moving their business to Elmendorf Avenue east of town. A fire destroyed most of the downtown businesses on November 6, 1903; however, Mrs. Means rebuilt her store using local lumber and reopened on January 9th with new exterior paint and other updated features including an elevator that led up to the second floor where she sold groceries by weight rather than volume (this feature still exists today). The Mean's Store continued operating until 1935 when it closed due to financial difficulties caused by World War II shortages of food items such as flour and oil. After World War II there were little or no economic opportunities for small towns like Lockhart so it declined rapidly over the next few decades until its decline began significantly around 1990 when much of its infrastructure stopped being used due to budget cuts resulting from Nafta/Welfare Reform efforts within Congressional District 10 which included Midland County lockhart tx map
In 1836, Lockhart was founded by brother-in-law and fellow Texan John H. Overstreet. The town began as a farming community with around 100 residents and grew to over 1,200 by 1850. In the early 1800s, Lockhart was an important stop on the Santa Fe Trail. The first post office in Lockhart opened in 1847. Lockhart's prosperity increased during the Texas Revolution of 1861-1865. The town became a center for trade as goods flowed in from New Mexico and Mexican territory. By 1870, Lockhart had become one of the most prosperous towns in Texas. It boasted a population of 3,000 people and a thriving commerce sector that included stores, mills, printing presses, cotton ginners and other businesses. By 1890, however, Lockhart's fortunes had tanked due to persistent drought conditions and increasing competition from nearby towns such as Fort Worth and Arlington Heights. The town closed its doors for good in 1892; its last resident was Samuel Sherer who died two years later at the age of 92.
