In the early 1800s, Lockhart was a small town in McLennan County. It was located on the banks of the Brazos River, about 20 miles east of Austin. The river served as a natural boundary between two Native American tribes and as a source of transportation for goods and people. The town started off as a log cabin settlement, and by 1846 it had grown to be an agricultural center with over 100 residents. Lockhart became known for its crops, including cotton, corn, wheat, hay, and butter. Lockhart, Texas is a small town in Tyler County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,521 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Wichita Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in Lockhart was James Hudgins in 1847. In 1851, William Baugh moved to Lockhart and began selling land to settlers. The townsite was named for Dr. Wm Ephraim Lockhart who arrived inTyler County in 1853 from Louisiana with his family and opened a medical office at what is now the corner of Elm and First Streets. By 1865, many farmers had settled around the town site including Jno Ivey who built a sawmill on the current location of State Street In 1907, A & P Railroad donated land east of town to build its own depot and line between Wichita Falls and Dallas. This added capacity to the local economy which helped make Lockhart one of Tyler County's most important communities during this time period. Today Lockhart is known for its annual Oktoberfest celebration which takes place over several days starting late September/early October each year; as well as its annual Pumpkin Festival which takes place from late October through early November each year .
