Lockhart, Texas is a small town in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. It was named for Rufus D. Lockhart who was the first settler in the area in 1875. The population of Lockhart at the 2010 census was 711. The townsite where Lockhart now stands was given to him by surveyors as part of their platting efforts in 1876. He acquired it from John Witherspoon and his family on February 12, 1877. From its beginnings as a small farming community, Lockhart grew rapidly thanks to its location near the Wichita River and its access to railroad lines and resources that led to rapid economic growth during the early 20th century. In 1911, when Hudspeth County became an independent county, Lockhart became one of its first municipalities.
