Lockhart is a town in Tarrant County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,906 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Amarillo–New Braunfels metropolitan area. The first settlers to Lockhart were James and Sarah Lockhart who arrived in 1848. They were the parents of General George Washington Lockhart who fought in the Mexican-American War and later served as Governor of Texas. James' brother John also came to Lockhart and married Sarah on November 5, 1849. The first school was built in what is now the downtown area of Lockhart in 1850 by Mrs. Elizabeth Hinnell. A second school was built on West Elm Street near present day fairgrounds around 1860 by Mrs. Catesby Smithwick or Maria Hillis comerford McNaught which became known as Holy Cross Catholic School from 1861 until it merged with Lubbock High School in 1965. In 1865, Mrs. McNaught donated land for a new high school which would eventually become Lubbock High School (now American University). A post office called "Lockhart" was established at this location on December 3, 1855, by order of General Sam Houston while he was President of the Republic Of Texas. The name change to "Lubbock" after Lubbock County had been created within Tarrant County on February 16, 1907 concurrent with county creation statewide that day under an act of Congress approved February 14th (). In 1912 William Silliman became teacher/director for public instruction at Lubbock High School before moving to Amarillo where he founded Silliman College which still operates today as one of America's leading private universities! lockhartsouthwest@gmailcom
In 1836, Lockhart was founded by James Bowie and his brothers. It became a post office in 1876. In 1907, the town of Lockhart merged with the nearby towns of Hondo, San Angelo, and White Sands to form the new City of Amarillo.
