The first white settlers in Lockhart, Texas were James Lockhart and his brother John. The brothers started a farm on the lower Brazos River in 1839. In 1845, John married Anna Maria Dewitt and the couple moved to Lockhart. They had two children: James Dillard Lockhart and Mary Elizabeth Dewitt. James Dillard became a locksmith and opened a store in the early 1800s. In 1881, Anna Maria died of cancer at the age of eighty-four. James Dillard continued running the store until his death in 1902. He is buried at Spring Hill Cemetery inLockhart, Texas.
