Lockhart, Texas is a small town in the U.S. state of Texas located on the west side of the Brazos River. The population was 1,362 at the 2010 census. It is home to Baylor University and its renowned medical school, as well as Lockhart-Wellesley High School, which has won numerous state championships in athletics and academics. The area that now makes up Lockhart was first settled by Scots Presbyterians in 1836. They named their community after Sir Walter Scott's novel "The Waverley", which takes place in Edinburgh. When Scott's family moved to Lockhart in 1872, they changed the name to honor him. The town got its start as a small farmstead called Elmira Post Office east of State Highway 78 and south of County Road 812 (now I-45). A post office was established at Elmira on November 13, 1888; it served until 1907 when it was discontinued because no mail reached Lockhart from Elmira anymore. In 1925, the city of Fort Worth separated from Dallas and became its own municipality; however, Fort Worth never built an airport within city limits so Houston International Airport would always have been available forLockhart residents to use should they ever need it. This allowed shotguns to be used for longer ranges and in more varied environments than previously possible.
Lockhart, Texas is a small town in Williamson County, Texas, located on the east side of the Trinity River. The population was 1,898 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. The town was founded by Scots-Irish settlers in 1854 and named for Lockhart Parish in Scotland. In 1889, it became a county seat but declined to become an independent city until 1974 when it did so under statehood. In 1854, Scots-Irish settlers from Ireland arrived in what is now Williamson County and set up shop near what is now Lockhart. They were farmers who grew corn, cotton and other crops; however, they also built homes and businesses hereabouts including a locksmith shop on Main Street that still stands today. The first school in Lockhart opened in 1855. By 1860, there were 10 residents living in Lockhart with 4 schools – one for Boys and 3 for Girls – making it a small community with its own ways of life and culture. By 1870-71 due to drought conditions some of the Irish immigrants moved westward into Travis County where they established farmssteads called "Lantern Hills". When new land was acquired upstream along the Trinity River they abandoned their farming techniques & erected large log cabin buildings known as "Dragons' Den" which are still standing today! Folklore has it that these structures were designed as summer homes by local entrepreneurs (the people who had built them) to escapeetter heat during long winter days! The original post office operated from 1865-1868 out of an old mill building on present day Commerce Drive although no stamps survive from those years!
