After World War II, Gun Manufacturing resumed in Lockhart as there was a lack of other markets for handguns so they continued to be produced with a few changes throughout the years including adding stocks and magazines (1948-1970) and becoming Heckler & Koch (H&K) Corporation in 1970. After H&K Corporation merged with Kahr Arms Company in 1986, Lockhart became their manufacturing center for both handguns and rifles which continues up to present day.

When they reached the intersection of State Highway 95 and US highway 6 (now Interstate 35), they discovered that there had been another community called "Lockhart" located about three miles to their east - this one having long since discontinued postal service! The two men decided it would be more polite to call their new community "Lockhart", derived from the fact that both were still living within a few miles of each other at the time of its establishment. One characteristic of early Lockhart residents was their adamant opposition to anything called " Driftwood". This appellation had once been common among local farmers because it referred to a type of cottonwood tree that grew abundantly along mostributaries of the Trinity River. Early Lockhardters proclaimed themselves as country gentlemen who would not tolerate such nonsense - indeed, some even builtLog Cabin Homes for themselves during those early years! Eventually annexation by Dallas created problems for local officials because many people from neighboring Dallas wanted to move into what had formerly been known as "Driftwood". In response, McLennan County commissioners voted to rename the town after Drayton Wagon Wheel Road rather than pay tribute to an objectionable appellation! In recent years, however, much has changed around Lockheart - including four Major League Soccer teams playing preseason games nearby; high school students starting classes; and several businesses setting up shop inside and outside lockharts old Depot Building! With all these developments going on, it's no wonder that crime rates have decreased significantly over the past few decades... until you remember that Lone Star College is just down the street!

The name Lockhart comes from pioneer George Lockhart and his family who settled there in 1876. The first post office called Lockhart was established in 1881. The community changed hands several times before it became a village in 1907. In 1920, Lockhart had a population of 2,000 and by 1930 it had increased to 4,500. At the time of the 2010 census, that number had decreased to 1,812 residents. The early settlers were farmers who raised cotton and cattle on their farms near Lockhart Creek until railroads arrived in the late nineteenth century and transported goods more cheaply to eastern cities such as Amarillo and Wichita Falls. On October 12, 1836, Lubbock County was organized from parts of Hudspeth and Travis counties. The county seat was established at Lockhart. In 1841, the first courthouse in Lubbock County was built. The building burned down in 1845, but a new courthouse was erected in 1849. Lubbock County experienced some growth during the 19th century. A post office opened in Lockhart on February 15, 1850, and grew rapidly; by 1860 there were over 100 residents living in the town. In 1870, a cotton gin and distillery were added to the town as well. During World War I, Lubbock County played an important role due to its location on the transcontinental railway line connecting Texas with Mexico City. Many factories were constructed in and around Lockhart during this time including Ciba-Geigy (later Hewlett-Packard), Texaco, JBL Audio & TV Manufacturing Company and McDonnell Aircraft Corporation plants.
