Lockhart, Texas is a small town in Hudspeth County, Texas, United States. It was founded by John Lockhart in 1876. The name comes from the phrase "lockhart for cattle." The population of Lockhart was 1,600 at the 2010 census. The first post office in Lockhart was established on March 25, 1877. The present post office building was built in 1909 and dedicated to Mrs. Addie Clementson. In 1912 the town had a population of 350 people and it consisted of only 12 buildings; these included a schoolhouse and two stores. By 1920 the population had grown to 1,200 people and it consisted of 36 buildings including a bank, cotton gin, gristmill, Methodist church and county courthouse. In 1928 there were 54 residents living in lockharts according to the US Census Bureau report; this number decreased to 30 by 1930 due to World War II shortages within Hudspeth County caused by the depression that began in 1929. In 1951 Lockhart had an estimated population of 450 people; this number decreased to 340 by 1970 due to subdivisions within Hudspeth County and other changes throughout that decade within Hudspeth County's demographics which led to an overall decrease in its population over time as well as decreases for many towns statewide such as Lockhart whose populations ranged from 350-450 inhabitants each during those years). The town of Lockhart, Texas was founded in 1881 by M.L. Trail and W.A. Crouch, two settlers from Ohio who had purchased land east of the Colorado River at what is now the city of San Antonio. The town grew rapidly and soon became a major railroad center, with its own station and depot. In 1907, the town annexed the neighboring village of Haughton, forming a single municipality under the name of Lockhart-Haughton. The townsite was renamed Lockhart in 1932 after Representative John A. Lockhart (D-Tex.) who served in Congress from 1937 to 1945 and helped secure passage of the National Defense Act that December.
