Lockhart is a town in Gregg County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,479 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Amarillo–New Braunfels Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Lockhart was James Aiken who arrived around 1849. He built a cabin on what is now Main Street and named it "Aiken's Cabin." Aiken's cabin served as the nucleus for what would become Lockhart. In 1860, Fenton Hinton organized the First Methodist Church in Lockhart and started to build a church on Park Avenue which he named "Hinton's Chapel" after his friend and pastor at First Methodist Church in Fort Worth, Fenton Hubbell Hinton. The first school in Lockhart opened in 1861 when John Waddell teacher taught 8th grade students at Red Horse School located on East Main Street. By 1865, there were 10 schools within 2 miles of Lockhart with over 100 students enrolled. In 1876, Jeptha Pugh purchased land east of town from Daniel McDonald and began to develop it into what would become known as Pugh Farms which today includes parts of downtown Lockhart along with portions of Green Lake Country Club and several other homes including one that still stands today known as “Pugh”s House." In 1879-1881 Drury Cretin ran an unsuccessful campaign for Gregg County Sheriff against Lewis Johnston who had been elected Sheriff the previous year by acclamation from all farmers living within 3 miles of Kingston where Cretin also lived (the only county seat then). Johnston won by wide margins but decided not to run for re-election because he wanted more control over county government through his position as sheriff rather than through electioneering efforts across the county ensuring that all citizens received their fair share of government services regardless of wealth or lack thereof." lockharts original post office was established on July 6th 1861 under license from US Postmaster General Amos Kendall with mail sent between Kingston and Athens via Decatur having transferred its service to Decatur prior to that date when those services were provided by Austin & Co.. From this point forwardlockhart became an important regional center for postal service providing mail both ways between these two cities as well as general delivery throughout Gregg County.. In 1886 City Councilman John Ritchie Sr requested permission from US Post Office Commissioners Alfred Blanchard and Willis Stephenson to open a branch office within town Limits just south of Railroad Tracks leading eastward into Amarillo proper so thatLOCKHEART could better compete with Amarillo becoming one city rather than two separate towns sharing onepostage system
In 1849, Lockhart was founded as a post office by John L. Lockhart and his wife Mary Ann. The first post office was in the Indian Territory on the Texas side of the Rio Grande River. In 1875, it moved to its present location on Main Street. The town of Lockhart began as a small community near where Main Street now stands. By 1880, it had grown to include a school, church, and several businesses including a livery stable and grocery store. A railroad station was built in 1903 and served the town until it closed in 1969. In 1916, Main Street was renamed Lockhart Avenue in honor of John L. Lockhart Sr., who had donated land for the city's growth. The city has since expanded beyond its original boundaries to include much of northeastern Brazoria County and parts of southwestern Williamson County
