Lockhart, Texas is a small town located in Williamson County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area. Lockhart was founded in 1879 by James Waddell and others as an agricultural community on the banks of the Trinity River. The name derived from lockharts or deep cuts made in trees to extract honey for export during the early 1800s. In 1865, General George Custer's cavalry invaded Indian Territory and burned Fort Supply near present-dayLockhart. In 1862, Major General John Custer's cavalry destroyed a detachment of Creek Indians at Pine Bluff Ferry near present-day Lockhart while engaged in operations against Confederate forces under Jubal Early west of Austin. On December 12, 1881, Lockhart became one of three towns within Williamson County when it was organized from portions of Van Zandt and Travis Counties. Lockhart is a small town in Texas, located about 30 miles south of Tyler. The population was 11,623 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Wilson County. The community was named for General George Lockhart, who fought in the Mexican-American War and in the American Civil War. It was first settled by Scots-Irish immigrants in 1848. In 1871, local artist John Hance moved to Lockhart from Paint Rock, Oklahoma and started a printing shop there that still operates today. In 1912, Lockhart had its first post office and began to serve residents of Wilson County as well as Callahan Municipal Airport next door. In 1925, Lockhart's first water tower became operational and it continues to serve the community today. A new courthouse opened in 1961 and has been used for various court proceedings ever since. Today, Lockhart is an agricultural town with a diverse economy that includes manufacturing (particularly paper products), retailing (especially grocery stores), light industrial activities (manufacturing aluminum cans) and agriculture (specifically cattle ranching). Some of the more notable businesses include: Mr.(?)s Paper Store - which has been familyowned since 1951; ABCDVD - which sells DVDs and CDs; First National Bank - which provides banking services; Bakersfield Chevrolet - which offers car dealership services; and Beaumont Electric Company - which produces power for homes and businesses.
