Lockhart, Texas is one of the oldest towns in Texas and it has been around since 1851. The town was originally named "Alief" after a creek that ran through it. It was renamed to its current name, Lockhart, because of the lock on the bayou that served as its main water supply.
Lockhart is a small town in Eldorado County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Sherman-Rice Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Lockhart was John Lockhart, who arrived in 1836. In 1846, Jno. Hargrave laid out a town site on land that he had purchased from the Comanche nation and named it Lockhart after himself and his son John Hargrave (1798-1868). One of the features of this early community were two lock gates which served as gates to the town square. In 1854, James Auld opened a grocery store in Lockhart and soon other businesses followed suit. By 1865, there were six stores in Lockhart with an average daily attendance of $2.50 each customer. In 1903, Samuel Dusenbery opened up his own general store which became one of the most successful businesses in the area during that time period; it continued to operate until 1978 when it closed its doors for good citing decline in business prospects due to technological advances such as television and internet marketing becoming more available at lower prices than ever before. A large contributing factor to this decline could be found throughout history when small towns have experienced rapid growth only to eventually shrink back into their original size due to economic conditions outside their control such as changing technology or natural disasters like Hurricane Katrina which destroyed large parts of Louisiana but not Texas giving rise to concerns about possible future disappearances within these communities if those same circumstances persisted elsewhere throughout the state or country.lockharttexas

Lockhart is a small town in McLennan County, Texas, United States. The population was 558 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area. Lockhart has three churches and one post office. The name of the town comes from a rancho that was given to Captain James Cook by Antonio López de Santa Anna. The first settler in Lockhart was John Waddell, who arrived in 1836. He built a log cabin on what is now Main Street and named it Waddell's Store. In 1837, James Hinton erected the first school house in Lockhart which he called "Hinton's School". A year later, Mr. Hinton added a second story to his home on present day Elm Street and named it "Hinton's Depot". In 1841, George Fenton arrived in Lockhart with his family and began trading goods with Indians along Buffalo Bayou. He built a cabin on what is today Washington Boulevard and named it Fenton's Store. About 1845-1846, Hiram Knowles established himself as a trader here and started selling whisky to Texans for Mission San Antonio de Padua (now Stonington) across Buffalo Bayou near where he had earlier traded goods with the Comanches under Chief Quanah Parker Jr.. On July 10th of that year, Knowles shot an Indian off his horse while playing poker at Fenton's Store; this event became known as the Grease War between Texas Rangers and Comanche Raiders." A few years after Knowles' death in 1865, Revs Rufus Browning (1800-1876), Dora Blythe (1871-)and their families settled here around 1870 when they came from McGregor County,. They founded First Baptist Church which still meets there today (). Mrs. Browning donated land for schools including Lockhart High School which opened its doors in 1927 ().
