The first known settlers to arrive in what is now Lockhart were two families who arrived on horseback on November 4, 1879, when James Aiken discovered land that would become Lockhart through his purchase of 5 leagues (18 acres) from David Fenton at a cost of $3 per acre. From this location, Aiken erected a small cabin and began farming heifers for local markets. On January 25, 1880, Elijah Crouch became the first white resident of Lockhart when he purchased 3/8 mile (1 km) east of present day Union Station from George Huntley for $5 per acre ($40 total). This location served as an early market town for cattle and sheep ranchers operating out of what is now eastern portions of Austin County. By 1886 there were twenty three businesses operating within a five-mile radius including six woolen mills; four grocery stores; two printing houses; two hotels; three churches; one schoolhouse; ten miles (16 km) worth (of track) passing through lockhart on wagons drawn by mules or horses over stone bridges spanning Trinity Creek which connected several smaller settlements including Farmersville to northbound travelers coming down southward on IH 10W which traversed then crossed Trinity Creek near present day University Park before terminating at Hwy 290E near downtown Austin
