On March 26, 2009, the City Council of Live Oak voted to annex with Galveston to form the Baytown Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA).

Live Oak, Texas was founded on December 8, 1836, by Colonel John C. Austin and his wife (Queen) of Mexico City. The first post office in Live Oak was established on July 4, 1837. On October 1, 1847, the town accepted a telegraph line from Galveston to allow communication between the towns and distant parts of Texas. In 1880 Live Oak became the county seat for Williamson County. The land that now includes Live Oak was purchased from the Apache Indians in 1828 by General Sam Houston as part of a larger land purchase from them made during the Mexican-American War. The first permanent settler in what is now Live Oak was James Hogg who arrived in November 1830 with his family and took up residence at what is now called Hogg’s Prairie. After moving several times over the years he settled on a piece of land that would later be known as “Hogg’s Hill”. In 1865 General Hardee burned all of the homes and plantations around live oak so settlers had to start over again Some people still remember how General Hardee burned down their homes when they were trying to build new ones near where they live today
Live Oak is a town in Burnet County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,463 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1857 by John Ransom and patents were issued to him and others in 1859. Live Oak is named for the live oak that grows near the original town site.
