Live Oak is a city in Tom Green County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Amarillo–Newcomb metropolitan area. Live Oak was founded in 1876 by James Fenton and named for the live oak tree that he found near his home. The tree was not actually located in Live Oak until 1886 when it was renamed from Waco to honorJames Fenton's father-in-law, Colonel George BaylorWaco had been renamed Baylor City in 1890 due to efforts by then Mayor George H. Baylor Sr.. Live Oak incorporated as a municipality on November 3, 1907. In 1889, a post office called "Waco" was established at the junction of Farm Road 9 and Ulysses S. Grant Boulevard (now US 287), about east of where Live Oak now stands. As Waco grew into an important cultural and educational center during the years leading up to World War II, its name changed several times: first to "Baylor City", then back to "Waco". In 1941, after more than 50 years of change, LiveOak became one of fourteen cities and townships within Tom Green County newly created as a result of countywide consolidation under pressure from Congress following the attack on Pearl Harbor. On December 13, 1951 - just two weeks before Christmas - LiveOak's incorporation as a municipality made history when Governor Coke signed legislation creating Tom Green County's six municipalities: Amarillo (the original town), Belton (the second town), Bryan (the third town), Colorado Springs (the fourth town), Lubbock (the fifth town) and Round Rock (the sixth town). On July 1, 1966 - less than two months after enactment of Proposition 5 which provided for annexation by Amarillo into Tom Green County - Anaconda filed suit seeking annexation intoLiveOak pursuant to that proposition; however no decision has ever been reached regarding this issue. The Post Office Museum located adjacent to downtown provides interesting insights into postal history within LiveOak as well as surrounding rural communities including Adobe Walls/Atchison Topeka Olathe and Wichita Falls . As far as shopping goes... well there are several malls closeby like Clear Lake Mall or Northwest suburban mall but they're all pretty small so you won't find anything really popular here unless you're looking for something unique or interesting... other than that there isn't really much else going on aside from some small businesses doing okay
