A later spelling was "Laughingoak," which then became "Live Oak." In 1887, when James Hogg (1784-1861), founder and first mayor of San Antonio organized its incorporation as a city, he named it Laughingoak City. The current name comes from an 1836 deed by John Boulware to Levi Coffin for 1/4 acre (0.16 km2) in what is now Live Oak Park east of I-10 and south of Loop 410 interchange. In 1876 Major General Zachary Taylor gave a donation to trustees for a public school system in present day Live Oak that would eventually become Rice University - one such gift remains on campus today as the Alumni Center Building. In 1923, when Austin founded his own municipality - Austin Municipal Court awarded land contiguous with LiveOak proper to Austin in order to create an open space adjacent to Main Street near where Union Station now stands - LiveOak donated two acres (8 ha) west of I-35W for parkland including annexation into nearby Arlington County as well as construction of numerous homesites along Elm Street between Houston Street and Manor Road.). This gift has been cited as one reason why live oak creek runs through much or allofthe downtown area today despite being less than 2 feet deep at most points during Much Ado Before Time timespan). During World War II, many plants were built within Live Oak’s borders for important U.S military production: radar equipment development at Raytheon Park continued until 1957; airplane engines manufactured by American Motors Corporation were assembled at Race Point Air Force Base until 1961; tanks produced by Chrysler Group were fabricated at Mobile Assembly Plant #2 until 1967; missiles built by Lockheed Martin Incorporated were assembled at Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company’s facility here until 1991).
