Live Oak is a city in Dallas County, Texas, United States. The population was 381 at the 2010 census. Live Oak is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area that would become Live Oak was originally settled by Germans in 1837 and named Schertz after their hometown of Schertz, Germany. In 1841, Englishman John Fenton bought land northeast of Schertz and began to name the area Live Oak after his favourite fruit tree - an orange orchard he had seen growing near Munich, Germany. In 1865, a post office was established at Live Oak with the name "Schertz". It continued to be used until 1893 when it was renamed "Dallas". In 1896, Dallas Improvement Association platting developers laid out streets for what would become downtown Dallas and included land for what would become Live Oak; as a result of this annexation, Live Oak became its own municipality with its own government and school board. The first store in downtown Dallas opened in 1915 on Elm Street by German immigrant Gustav Mahler as Mahler's Grocery Store No. 1 & 2. By 1925 there were over 100 stores located within Downtown Dallas alone! A number of large department stores (J C Penney, Sears Roebuck & Co., Kress) moved into downtown during this time period but most notably Joffrey Barrow's old clothing factory which occupied 3 floors of what is now Scripps Center across from City Hall on Main Street in 1916-17 when it produced over 2000 items per hour! An exhibit about this period can be viewed at City Hall Annex/Scripps Center through Oct 9th-15th each year! On October 15th 1916 management announced they were going out of business because they could not keep up with demand from their customers who had flocked to see the exhibit! At that point Mayor Robertson convened an emergency meeting to discuss whether or not to close the plant due to economic conditions however no action was taken until 1917 when Plano annexations made it difficult for Joffrey Barrow to continue operation without too much competition! After his death in 1918 plans began being made for redevelopment including demolition of many buildings within DowntownDallas which finally happened on December 14th 1973 just before Christmas!!
Live Oak was founded in 1836 by Captain James K. Polk, who served as the first U.S. President. The city was named for a live oak tree that grew near the original landing site on San Marcos Bayou. Live Oak became a municipally chartered town in 1884 and held its first election that year. In 1907, it annexed the neighboring town of Orange Beach to form a unified municipality.
