Live Oak, Texas is a small town located in Gregg County, Texas. The population was 2,914 at the 2010 census. Live Oak is part of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. It was founded in 1884 by John Hance and his family. Live Oak is one of two towns in Gregg County that were established before Texan independence from Mexico on Nov. 16, 1836. The other town was Mckinney. Live Oak's first store opened its doors on October 15, 1884. At that time it was the only business in the community and it sold goods such as feed and hay to farmers throughout Gregg County. AsTexans declared their independence from Mexico on November 16th 1836, many people living east of League City (now Arlington) left for what would become Texas according to historian Harry Singleton: "The eastern border of this new Republic had not yet been fixed by treaty or formal declaration but there could be no doubt about its location – east of San Antonio!" On December 1st, 1836 Captain James Bowie wrote a letter to Governor Sam Houston informing him that Texan forces had surrounded and destroyed Santa Anna's army at Palo Alto de Santa Anna near San Antonio due to Mexican Emperor Agustín de Santa Anna's failure to supply his troops with munitions necessary for an upcoming battle against American General Zachary Taylor's army under General Joseph Ewing which he estimated would happen within two weeks! "...a militia company led by Lieutenant Colonel John Hance...arrived early one morning..." After learning about Spanish forces nearby he ordered his men into action ordering them "to take possession of all objects mentioned in your letter" including homes and stores along Utopia Creek where they found cannons belonging to Mexican forces stationed there! On January 7th 1840 Major George Brown organized a mounted unit called the First Battalion Texas Mounted Infantry known today as Brown’s Rangers which became attached to Brigadier General David Aiken’s brigade commanded by Nathan Bedford Forrest who captured Brownsville on April 12th 1840 during the Battle of Palo Alto de Santa Anna after routing Mexican cavalry under Govoron Pico Lopez published report stating “the Mexicans are retreating through several places here towards Corpus Christi & Brownsville; we have pursued them every chance we got; they cannot escape us now they are so bottled up”Aftermath of Battle:Mexican Casualties:23 Americans killed, 55 wounded; 5 Mexicans dead.–Texas Mounted Infantry Regiment Journal entry In less than six months since their founding these two small towns had established themselves economically as well militarily as socially within Gregg county leading into history when Texans declared their independence from Mexico on November 16th 1836 becoming one country with three official jurisdictions - United States federal district (northwest corner), Coahuila y Tejas state (southwest corner), and Gregg County (central). With over 2,000 residents this thriving community quickly became known for its beautiful live oak trees which are still present today providing shade for numerous businesses including banks, grocery stores national military post headquarters barracks hospitals schools nurses etc., churches also enjoy ample shade during summertime with live oak tree pruning services offered monthly
On November 3, 1836, the first slave trade in Texas took place when a group of about twenty-five hundred enslaved Africans set out from St. Augustine, Florida for what would be their new home in Texas. The trip was difficult and dangerous because of the pirates that infested the area and also because of the lack of food and water available on the journey. After reaching Galveston Bay, they were sold into slavery by wealthy Texans who hoped to get rich off of them. The slaves who were not killed during the voyage or bought back at some point were used as servants by various families in Texas for many years until they were finally freed in 1865. From then on, most of them lived with white residents and worked as domestic help or farm workers.
