Live Oak is a town in Wise County, Texas, United States. The population was 2,611 at the 2010 census. The name of the town comes from Live Oak Creek that flows through it. Live Oak is located on the banks of the Trinity River. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area and has a strong agricultural base. The first settlement in what is now Live Oak was made by prospectors who found coal and oil shale in 1859 near present-day San Antonio. By 1865, there were over forty residents living in three stores and two blacksmiths around Live Oak Creek. In 1868, Jeptha Hockaday founded an unsuccessful cattle ranch here which he named Maverick Ranch after his horse Maverick. A post office called Maverick had been established in 1864 but did not take effect until 1870 because mail service was not available to areas east of San Antonio until that year. In 1872, Donnell Hughes started a flour mill on Buffalo Bayou and named it Live Oak after himself and his father-in-law Pecos Bill Long (1824-1901), proprietor of Hughes Mill Company near Round Rock, TX., one of first major flour mills built in Texas during the late 1800s when corn became global currency In 1886, John Wesley Hardin purchased 1/2 interest in Hughes Mill from Pecos Bill Long for $5 per acre; Hardin soon began producing cottonseed oil at Hughes Mill using local water power from nearby White Oaks Lake while also operating a sawmill and grist mill on Buffalo Bayou . After several years with Hardin as owner or operator all operations were sold to James Wertheimer (1850-1925) who operated Wertheimer ginners' distillery on Buffalo Bayou until 1903 . With its production capabilities hardpressed to keep up with demand from Europe during Prohibition era , Wertheimer closed down most distilleries including the live oak ginnery & malting plant by 1920 . From these beginnings,,,,Live Oak developed into an important center for agriculture within southern Texas due to its location along major waterways,.During World War II many civilian aircraft manufacturers such as Lockheed Aircraft manufactured parts here including some models flown off U2E airliners In 1951,, when Wise County became part of new Dallas County following statehood ,LiveOak transitioned from primarily agricultural focus to suburban development with large apartment complexes emerging along IH 35WSR which paralleled Trinity River

The site was chosen because it offered excellent hunting and fishing opportunities as well as access to Joinville,Nueces County, and San Antonio Counties on the southern border of Mexico. The community grew quickly due to its location and ample resources. In 1875,due to drought conditions,the population decreased from 150 to 30 but increased again in 1907 when new irrigation systems were built nearby. In 1916–17 a fire destroyed much of Live Oak Creek including many homes and businesses but not before the town had grown tenfold with several thousand people living there at one time
