Live Oak, Texas is located in the US state of Texas. The city was founded in 1876 by a group of settlers who traveled from Indiana. The name Live Oak comes from the live oak tree that grew near the original settlement. In 1940, Live Oak became an independent city and remains one of its namesake today. The first people to live in what is now Live Oak were farmers who arrived from Indiana in 1876. By 1840, there were twenty-one families living in what is now Live Oak. Of these, eleven soon left for other parts of the United States due to hard times during the Civil War and lack of money available for farming. The remaining eight families continued to farm until 1870 when they applied for land grant from the US government. In 1872, three men named John Hargrave, Wm Jourdain and James Ladd came down with a wagonload of goods to start a new life in what is now Live Oak. They chose this location because it offered good access to water supplies and timber resources that could be used for their farmsteads and businesses. When they arrived, they found that there was already a community established at this spot called "Hargrave's Landing." This community became known as "Hargrave's Town" because its founders were all from that town in Indiana. In 1840, four brothers named Abram Morse Jr., Levi Morse, Salmon Morse and Jonathan Comer settled down on 640 acres (240 hectares) north-west of Houston along Buffalo Bayou (now Tomball Bayou). This area had been part of Sam Houston’s Domain before it was taken over by Texan forces under General Antonio Lopez on November 3rd, 1846 following his victory over Mexican forces at Palo Alto Hill outside San Antonio de Alamo City; this event marked the beginning of Texan colonization within Mexico territory which would eventually become Texas (the Hudspeth Purchase). map] Abbott Ranch] After years of speculation among investors about where to locate an ideal site for a new town or village – including one proposed by Stephen Austin –Abbott Ranch emerged as likely candidate after surveys revealedAbbott Creek flowed through two rich tracts adjoining San Augustine County (later Harris County): six hundred acres east [of present-day Houston], then two hundred seventy five acres west [of present-day Cypress Creek]. James Mabry & Co., general contractors & real estate developers based out OF texas began purchasing large blocksbought between 1800&1860 sq ft lots starting at $5 per acre james mabry started selling Lots “on or around Main Street” on October 25th 1830
