Live Oak, Texas is a town in Webb County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,721 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin–Round Rock metropolitan area. Live Oak's natural resources include oak trees and other timber resources. The first Europeans to visit what is now Live Oak were Spanish traders working out of San Antonio in 1541. In 1795 General Sam Houston journeyed through this area when he was looking for new land to claim for the Texans after their victory over Mexico at the Battle of San Jacinto. On his way back from that battle he stopped at Live Oak on his way southward. In 1836 Captain William Broun (1812-1872) built Fort Worth on a bluff above the bayou which served as a supply depot for Corpus Christi during the Mexican–American War and later as the capital of Texas. When Fort Worth became a city in 1851 it included much of today's downtown including live oak trees that were brought over with fortifications by Captain Broun from New Orleans during that war. Live Oak continued to be an important center for commerce until after World War II when it declined because of suburbanization and then desegregation in TX and elsewhere throughout America. However, some regeneration has taken place in recent years around downtown Live Oak with businesses like The Living Room starting up to bring vitality back to what had been an abandoned core district near I-35W just east of downtown.
