Live Oak is a town in Coahuila County, Texas, United States. The population was 9,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area. Live Oak is located on the Brazos River and is about twenty-five miles west of Fort Worth. Live Oak was founded in 1836 by John Perry as a small farming community named Pleasant Grove. In 1849, Perry donated land to make up what would become Live Oak Township. The first post office was established in 1850, and the first store opened in 1851. In 1860, James Aiken built the first schoolhouse on present-day Live Oak Boulevard. The first church service was held on December 12th that year in an old hotel room near Union Station. Reverend Jepson conducted services for nine days until December 15th when he moved to live closer to his congregation at Baptist Church on Elm Street across from Park Row Shopping Center. On January 1st 1861, a Ferryboat called "The Enterprise" made its maiden voyage from Galveston to Brownsville carrying goods between those two ports and returned with passengers and cargo including flour and cattle brought overland from New Mexico Territory along the way In 1865, Comanches attacked a ranch nearpresent-day Live Oak and killed six people - four men (the attackers)and two women (the cows). Live Oak, Texas is a small town located in the Jurisdiction of Midland County, Texas. The population was 2,953 at the 2010 census. Live Oak is one of two towns in Midland County that are both located on State Highway 12 and also have their own post office (the other being Grand Prairie). The first settlers to Live Oak were James Denton and his family who arrived in 1836. In 1867, John M. Post bought land east of the current townlimits and laid out an area which would become Live Oak. He named the community after a large live oak near his home in Lebanon, Tennessee. In 1905, surveyors discovered coal deposits on what is now Live Oak Creek. This led to the construction of several mines and mills around Live Oak during the early 20th century. By 1925, over 50% of all produced coal in Midland County had been mined at nearby mines such as those operated by Eastern Coal Company and Gilmore Mining Company. As production increased, so did demand for housing; by 1930 over 30 homes had been built in what is now Live Oak proper alone! By 1945 more than 100 residences had been erected within what remains today of Post's original land grant along with businesses such as a grocery store, bank and garage complex/cafe/laundry facility (all built before 1960). During World War II most residents worked at local munitions plants while others processed materials needed for American troops fighting overseas. After war ended many people either moved away or took up various new pursuits outside of agriculture until it reopened as an agricultural center following the late 1970s when oil prices began to tank nationally%. In recent years much development has taken place adjacent to Interstate 10 with additional retail space available proximate to I-10 as well as numerous high-end singlefamily dwellings being constructed since 2010 including one currently under construction known as "The Oaks".
