Live Oak is a small town in the Edwards County seat of Fort Worth, Texas. It is located on U.S. Highway 69, about 15 miles east of Fort Worth and 30 miles southwest of Dallas. The population was 10,786 at the 2010 census. Live Oak is part of theDallas-Fort Worth Metroplex metropolitan area. The Live Oak community was founded by Scotsmen in 1873 as a cattle rancher's settlement on what is now Griffin Road northeast of downtown Fort Worth. A post office was established in 1875, and the name change to Live Oak in 1907 when a cotton gin was built there. The town's first store opened in 1888 and its first school in 1889; both were constructed by local farmers and businessmen who had bought land for them from Waller County commissioners. In 1902, LiveOak annexed nearby Ballwin to form a single municipality with a population of 21 residents; that annexation remains in effect today. In 1911, construction began on the current courthouse complex (containing three buildings), which became operational that year; it replaced an earlier structure dating back to 1881 that had been destroyed by fire. The present courthouse features grandiose architecture typical of early 20th century American courtship venues such as courthouses throughout Texas – most notably its four granite towers (the tallest being 137 feet high). In 1957, LiveOak incorporated as a city under the terms of Act 9256, based primarily upon its growing commercial importance as an agricultural center serving counties around Fort Worth and Dallas proper as well as neighboring Ballwin and Marble Falls communities. At its peak during the 1960s–1970s period, Living Oaks had over 100 businesses employing more than 2,000 people; however this has since declined due to numerous factors including population growth within those surrounding counties while commercial services have increased within downtown Fort Worth itself."
The first live oak in Texas was planted in 1827 on the property of Captain James Robertson. The tree was a gift from General Sam Houston and served as his personal symbol of strength and defiance during the Mexican-American War. In 1868, John C. Garner, who had been born in Live Oak, purchased the land around the tree for $2,000. He began to plant live oaks on the property and eventually made it his home. In 1916, Garner donated more than 400 acres of land west of Live Oak to Baylor University in order to create a nature preserve that would include an oak forest, field hospital, and research center. Today, Live Oak is one of Baylor's most popular campuses with over 44,000 students living on campus. The park offers more than 350 acres of woods and gardens along with several kilometers of hiking trails throughout its perimeter.
