Live Oak is a town in Cooke County, Texas, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2000 census. Live Oak is located in the eastern part of the county and bordered by Archer City to the east, Potterville to the south, and Smithville to the west. The first settlers in Live Oak were farmers who arrived around 1836. They built their first cabin on a small piece of farmland that they acquired from John Slaughter. The area now known as Live Oak was first settled by German immigrants in 1838. In 1846, David Livingstone founded what is now Live Oak after leaving his ranch near Fort Worth for Texas with his family. He named it for an oak tree he saw while on horseback near Archer City. Soon after arriving in Texas, Livingstone met Mary Ann Gregg who bore him three children: James liveoak (1847-1927), John Livingston (1849-1936) and Scotsman HughLivingstone (1851-1937). In 1850, James Livingston married Calista Rappe and they started a grocery store at 6th and Holmes Streets in Live Oak which became one of the largest general stores in northcentral Texas. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Union troops burned down much of downtown Market Street including the store where Livingston had opened his business two years earlier when Market Street was still called "Stroud's Alley." In 1865, James Livingston donated land to build Baylor University's first dormitory complex on campus which remains today one of Baylor University's most iconic landmarks. After Buchanan’s death in 1865 and Reconstruction ended following Confederate surrender at Appomattox Court House less than two months later, many northerners moved south into what is now Cooke County seeking opportunities for economic advancement like those available by living off government subsidies that were available only to citizens of Confederate states which seceded from America following Abraham Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation on April 12th,. Many businesses that remain extant today such as Girdler Chevrolet & Furniture Store (now Girdler Chevrolet), White’s General Store (now White’s BBQ), Pabst Blue Ribbon beer company manufacturing plant #2/3 across from High School (now Pabst Blue Ribbon Brewery) all originated or continue operations due to government assistance like crop insurance bounties offered through agents such as Juro Wirth & Son Auctioneers which aided farmers during this time period; agricultural economist Earl Butz testified before Congress about these benefits during hearings convened by Representative Emanuel Celler on May 9th 1966 citing “the large plantations growing cotton...It has been computed that since 1913…the Federal Government has furnished $247 million worth of assistance directly or indirectly to economically distressed areas within our borders – more than any other country! This assistance includes credit institutions loan guarantees; industrial production programs; agroforestry projects;and Rural Electrification Administration loans….This program has resulted not only in increased productivity but also job creation throughout our Economic Regions….." In fact according to Butz' testimony some agencies involved with this program include: "The Department of Agriculture [which] administers a market research program providing input into development plans for new markets…"; "The Department of Commerce [which] provides marketing support services for commodities marketing organizations…"; "Texas A&M University–Commerce Research Center helps develop new products for local retailers…." ;"The Small Business Administration [whose] Loan Guarantee Program advances loans up to $25 million…" Many other industries have also benefited from government largesse like technology companies such as Apple Inc., Lockheed Martin Corporation and Google LLC having their headquarters located within walking distance or close proximity to major city centers like Austin or Dallas giving them access to low cost workers variety essential if they are looking To compete with those big companies
