Little Elm is a small town in Johnson County, Texas, located on the banks of the Neches River. The population was 2,811 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Houston metropolitan area. Little Elm was founded in 1836 by John Fenton and his family. The first post office at Little Elm was established in 1837. A cotton gin and mill were built in 1839, and a school was also built that year. In 1840, James Mixon established a store here to sell goods brought overland from San Antonio by stagecoaches. By 1841, there were six stores in Little Elm; two of these wereowned by Fenton himself and four by others associated with him. In 1849, John Crouch purchased land east of downtown for $10 per acre (it had been donated to him by General Sam Houston). He soon erected a log cabin known as the Crouch House which served as his headquarters duringthe 1850s and 1860s when he represented Texas in Congress from Dallas. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Confederate forces burned down Crouch's house; however, he rebuilt it within three years and continued to live there until his death in 1902. In 1865-1866, Little Elm became home to one of the first oil refineries on Texan soil when John Giddings organized an expedition under Captains Rufus Kinglake and George Prentice to explore oil resources near Big Creek Pass north of Clear Lake (). Giddings became determined not to let Mexico have control over this valuable resource since it would mean they could purchase American possessions at low cost while we languished without any means of defense or commerce against them.—Editor’s note: This event helped spur development around Big Creek Pass throughout much of Central Texas.—John Wrenn
Lee County was organized on November 15, 1870, from parts of Denton County. On February 14, 1875, it was renamed to Little Elm County in honor of General Robert E. Lee and his wife Elizabeth “Betsy” Johnston.
