Little Elm is a small town in Ellis County, Texas, United States, located on the north side of the city of Austin. The population was 2,057 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Austin-Round Rock metropolitan area. Little Elm is home to Baylor University and Texas A&M University-Commerce. The first settlers in Little Elm were people from Kentucky who arrived in 1839. In 1840, two men from Illinois named John Clements and Solomon Asbury bought land about six miles east of present day Little Elm for $2 per acre (1/4 mile²). The town's name was chosen by a group of seven farmers who met to choose a new name for their village after hearing about a place called "Elm" near Lexington, Kentucky. They decided on "Little Elm" because it sounded like someone would call them if they ever got lost in the woods. The first post office was built in 1841 and opened under the name "Emmis". In 1845, James Melson opened a store there which became the mainstay of local commerce until 1907 when Waco Transfer Station came into operation across town and replaced it as Little Elm's main commercial center. In 1870, J.P McCullough founded an oil well south of present day Elm Street and began production that year. By 1901 production had reached 1 million barrels per day (). This led to increased demand for goods brought overland by rail from Houston so McCullough built a large warehouse east of Main Street which still stands today known as McCulloughs Oil Storage & Distribution Company building #3 (). He also developed an agricultural enterprise that included raising stock and growing crops such as corn, beans, rice and cotton; this enterprise later became known as McCullough Cottonseed Farms Incorporated.). When World War I started hostilities began with Austria-Hungary on July 29th 1914 Missouri citizens Rufus Scruggs (1863–1937) his brother George Pemberton (1866–1945) Michael O’Donnell (1869–1949), Daniel Burke (1872–1963), Michael Allbright(? – ?) all men residents or natives thereof went into military service; many did not return home until long after conflict ended including Rufus Scruggs Sr., George Pemberton Jr., Michael O’Donnell Sr., Daniel BurkeJr., Michael AllbrightJr., & Josephine McLaughlin (& one female) . Most were incarcerated at Fort Worth but some returned home where most died before their trial date even though released pending resolution Of What Happened To Them . The first post office in what is now Little Elm was established in 1840. A cotton gin and mill were built on the creek in 1842, and the first store opened in 1847. The town of Little Elm began to grow rapidly after it was designated as a railroad town in 1872. The population reached 10,000 by 1880, and it increased to 25,000 by 1910. By 1920, Little Elm had become one of the largest cities in Texas.
